The article presents a biography of English historian Edward Gibbon. Gibbon was born at Putney, England in 1737 and studied at Westminster School and Magdalen College, Oxford. In 1758, Gibbon published his "Essay on the Study of Literature," and became a captain in a militia regiment and travelled around Europe in 1763. He conceived the idea of writing a history of Rome upon visiting that city and in 1776, the first volume of his famous work "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" was published. Gibbon died in London in 1794.
