The results of the first researches on diabetic population ( Wilkerson and Krall in U.S.A. and Schliack in Germany) carried out after the second world war, already showed a relatively uniform diffusion of diabetes mellitus; moreover it was possible to show a frequence of the disease substantially greater than appeared to be probable according to the previous data. The diagnostic methods were improved further on. The increased power of investigation brought difficulties in the diagnostic valuation, expecially in the aged. For the purpose of clarifying more detailed questions, further researches are necessary by a method agreed upon on an overnational ground if possible. The results till now obtained have been scheduled. In the last 15 years by means of a systematic research it has been possible to identify till now thousands of diabetics that in times past would have been unrecognized, and to whom in this way a more timely treatment has been assured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
