The article presents the analysis of J.F.Cooper's works on the subject of cultural dialogue between two races: American Indians and the first white colonizers. The national American writer retells about 150 years from the history of his country (from the mid 17th century to the beginning of the 19th). This period is known for constant cruel battles between Indians and colonizers with rare peaceful moments on North American continent. Describing the events on the frontier territory, the author compares the two races and defines their peculiarities in his novels. Being a descendant of the colonizers, the author himself pays respect to the Indian culture. Moreover, he highlights a number of strong points of Indians superiority over white Americans. The first impression is that the two cultures are in opposition, but Cooper succeeds in finding some common features even in religion and traditions. Both Indians and colonizers have a special feeling towards the American land that, on the one hand, became the reason of conflict, and on the other hand, the basis of forming common views. The myth of the Promised Land as one of the national myths and its reflection in literature offers valuable material for research into the issue of forming American cultural identity, which is topical due to the active position of the USA in the contemporary world.
