The article discusses the history of the military department of the University of Alabama. Particular focus is given to the role of student violence in University president Landon Cabell Garland's decision to form the department. It is suggested that Garland designed the mandatory program as a means of transforming the University's educational, moral, and disciplinary system as a whole. Details on student participation in the U.S. Civil War are presented. Other topics include slavery, the financing of the department, and military conscription.
