When the metaphor of a world falling apart is applied to the rather less grand realm of institutions that have put themselves in charge of performances of Western classical music, it is not entirely so bad a thing as that. Still, there is a much greater likelihood of adventure and exploration at the peripheries. Better the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York city than the New York Philharmonic or the Metropolitan Opera; and where choice of repertory, if not always successful realization, is concerned, better the New York City Opera than the many Don Giovannis.
