The formal paramedical education in Myanmar (1960-1964) was established for four-year degree course with the collaboration of British Colombo Plan and Department of Health. Institute of Paramedical Science (1964-1986) was founded in Yangon General Hospital for four-year degree courses for Medical Technology, Pharmacy, Radiography and Physiotherapy. Then, Institute of Paramedical Science provided two-year diploma course since 1986 to 1993. The University of Medical Technology(UMT), Yangon (formally named as Institute of Paramedical Science) was established in 1993 providing four-year degree course. In 1999, the sister school of UMT, Yangon was opened in Mandalay as well as the Military Institute of Nursing and Paramedical Science (MINP) in 2002. The Universities of Medical Technology, Yangon and Mandalay are under the Department of Medical Science (DMS), Ministry of Health and the Military Institute of Nursing and Paramedical Science is carried out by Military. Both UMT and MINP offer four-year Bachelor of Medical Technology (B.Med.Tech) and two-year Master of Medical Technology (M.Med.Tech) degree programs (established in 2005) in physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology and medical imaging technology. Approximately 180 undergraduate students are accepted for these three programs annually. For post graduated course, the number of intake is determined according to Country's needs and available resources. In curriculum structure for B.Med.Tech (Physiotherapy) course, English, Myanmar, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology (Botany & Zoology), TPPD(Total professional personal development), Elective (Basic Computer Technique, IT, First Aid, library) are included in 1 st year class ; Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, General pathology, Kinesiology are learned in 2 nd year class; Exercise therapy, Electrotherapy, General Medical Condition and General Surgical Condition are in 3 rd year class with the hospital bloc posting in Yangon General Hospital, Central Women Hospital and National Rehabilitation Hospital; in 4 th year class, Rheumatology, Trauma & Orthopaedic Conditions, Pediatric & Geriatric Conditions and Neurology & Rehabilitations are included and also with the hospital bloc posting in Yangon General Hospital, Yangon Orthopaedic Hospital, Yangon Children Hospital, National Rehabilitation Hospital, Mental Health Hospital and Ministry of Sports. For M.Med.Tech course, including one dissertation paper, Applied Anatomy & Physiology in Physiotherapy, Exercise Physiology, Advance Biomechanics & Kinesiology, Research methodology in Physiotherapy, Statistics-basic course and Biophysics in Physiotherapy are in 1 st academic year and Advanced physiotherapy practice in muscular disorders, Specialized physiotherapy technique, Advanced physiotherapy practice in paediatric & geriatric patients, Community Based Rehabilitation are included in 2 nd academic year. From 1993 to 2012, the universities of UMT (Yangon and Mandalay) and MINP have provided 1079 degree holders as well as 41 Master degree holders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
