Hotel rooms are empty and conference rooms have gone dark, but plans are still under way to expand meeting space around metro Chicago, Illinois. The bet is that when the economy improves, so will the corporate event and travel business. As McCormick Place readies its latest addition, suburban Schaumburg, Lombard and Naperville are moving toward final approvals on new convention facilities, all of which will likely create a collision course between downtown Chicago and the suburbs, two distinct corporate meetings markets. The Greater Woodfield Convention and Visitors Bureau in Schaumburg is planning to start construction next year on a 387,000-square-foot convention center expected to open by 2006. Thomas Kraft, a recruiter in the hospitality industry who was director of sales and marketing at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Chicago North Shore in Mundelein until late last year, says the hotel regularly took 50% off its $170 room price to favored customers. Associates Inc. in Chicago, plans the Chicago Midwest Beauty Show, which draws close to 60,000 people each year to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. The suburbs and Chicago are planning a buildup of meeting space. INSET: SITES TO SEE.
