The famous columnist Pieter Le Doulx (1730-1807) praised the painter Franciscus van Paemel in his Levens der konst-schilders. The latter was a relatively unknown artist from Ghent who deserves more attention than he has received up until now. His life is an ideal illustration of the career opportunities within the artistic environment of the 18th century. Van Paemel moved to Bruges at around the age of eighteen to build an artistic career. He combined training in the studio of Jan Antoon Garemijn with classes at the local academy. Van Paemel had already enjoyed some renown. At a young age he studied at the Academy of Ghent. There he displayed his talent in drawing competitions, which earned him his first assignments. The decorations by his hand in the registers of the Ghent trade of wood engravers, carpenters and joiners are illustrative of the training he went through. This article reflects the debate about the impact thaL crafts and academies exerted on the training of artists during the Ancien Regime. The life of Van Paemel demonstrates the crucial role played by Lhe Academy in the training of a young artist as well as in the development of a professional network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
