Yasmin Bates, creator of Harris Bank's neighborhood lending program in the 1980s, is known for mentoring up-and-comers. "I have a passion for the development of people," she says. Ask her two nephews, whom Bates took in and raised 17 years ago when her sister died suddenly. "There was a need, and it was like autopilot: Just do it," she recalls. Bates also serves on the board of Glenwood School, a residential school for kids living in troubled, low-income households. At Harris, she oversees some 1,000 people as head of the Chicago, Illinois-based bank's retail banking business in the city and south suburbs.
