While the last volume of Massimo d’Azeglio’s Epistolario was being printed, we received – acquired from Casa del Manzoni in Milan – a letter from Massimo d’Azeglio to Clementina Carnevali Mongardi. The letter is undated, although it is certainly from 1847, so it was placed at the end of the section of undated letters in volume XII, the last one of Azeglio’s Epistolario, where unfortunately... it does not appear! The purpose of this note is to remedy this unintentional omission and correct the reference to Giovanni Arrivabene: the right reference is to his nephew Opprandino (Epist., XII, p. XIV-XV). Azeglio’s familiarity with Clementina is documented in a series of letters dating from 1842 to 1860, although it is not possible to establish the date of period of their first meeting. Count Giovanni Arrivabene (Mantua 1787- 1881) had been living in Brussels for several years and could not have been the recipient of the letter to Carnevali Mongardi. His name, mentioned in the introduction to vol. XII, should therefore be corrected. The relationship between the author and journalist Opprandino Arrivabene (Mantua 1807 - Rome 2 Jan. 1887), instead, is well documented. The abundant correspondence with Marquis Filippo Ala Ponzoni (198 letters sent to Genoa between 1855 and 1858, 46 letters addressed to Paris from 1859 to 1862) is in the Opprandino Arrivabene Archive of the City Library in Torino, while the correspondence with Giuseppe Verdi (62 letters), who was a close friend of d’Azeglio’s, can be read in A. Alberti, Verdi intimo (1861- 1886), Mondadori, 1931.
