The article examines tourism supply using the structure, conduct and performance (SCP) paradigm, and game theory. It also examines a number of the economic issues in tourism. The SCP paradigm is used to describe tourism markets and to highlight key features as a necessary first step towards the analysis of market structures, behaviour and performance. The advantage of the SCP paradigm is that it gives an overview showing the interrelationship of many elements. These can be added to or adapted to reflect the circumstances in different markets, as is indicated by the application of the framework to tourism intermediaries. However, the approach is not well suited to examining the process of firms' decision-making and behaviour, for which recent developments in game theory are more appropriate. Game theory can consider the role of technological change by showing how firms use research and development and the associated changes in technology as a competitive strategy in relation to other firms.
