A new report from the Institute of AIDS in Jiangsu, China explores the characteristics of different HIV-1 risk populations based on the genetic transmission network of newly diagnosed HIV cases. The study used HIV-1 genetic transmission networks to identify key risk populations and risk factors for HIV-1 prevention and control. The researchers analyzed HIV-1 pol sequences from plasma samples and found that CRF01_AE was the most common subtype. Risk factors for inclusion in the HIV-1 gene network included age over 60, heterosexual transmission, specific subtypes, and CD4+ T lymphocyte count. The study concludes that the HIV-1 genetic transmission network is effective in identifying undiagnosed cases and determining risk infections, and recommends further investigation and intervention to achieve the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic.
