A recent study conducted by researchers at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has found that implementing a standardized neuroprotective protocol can significantly reduce the risk of spinal cord ischemia (SCI) after branched endovascular repairs. The protocol includes preoperative steroids, acetazolamide, intraoperative hemodynamic parameters, and postoperative treatment goals. The study analyzed data from 174 consecutive patients, with 67 patients treated after the implementation of the protocol. The results showed a reduction in SCI rates and renal failure, as well as improved 1-year survivability. The findings suggest that this neuroprotective protocol can improve outcomes for patients at high risk of developing SCI. [Extracted from the article]
