According to research, teachers feel that the public image of their work is negative. Therefore, it is necessary to study what the public image of schools, i.e. the teachers' workplace, is like. In this article, I investigate the public image of schools as presented in Helsingin Sanomat from the 1980s to the 2010s. Helsingin Sanomat is Finland's most widely circulated newspaper. The themes it raises are important in terms of public image. It is important to study the public image of a phenomenon or organisation, because it affects people's mental images. Mental images, on their part, represent the truth to their bearers, i.e. the perception of how things really are. Research has shown that improving the public image of a profession makes it more attractive as a career choice. Negative publicity affects applications and recruitment in the field. In order to influence the public image, it is necessary to understand what it is like and how it has developed. Most of the writings studied here were related to schools' teaching arrangements and curriculum. During the research period, the curriculum was revised, which probably affected the number of writings. Writings related to the themes of diversity and bullying quadrupled from the 1980s to the 2000s. The theme of the teacher's work seemed to be sensitive to the impact of news coverage of individual events. Based on the writings, individual events can have a big negative impact on public image. About half of the articles were negative from the point of view of building a public image. About 20% were positive and about 30% were neutral. Writing about the teacher's everyday life was clearly negative throughout the research period. The most positive writings were the writings about everyday school life. The number of opinion pieces increased significantly in the 2010s. At that time, 60% of the articles were written by journalists and 40% were opinion pieces. There was a change in the content of the opinion pieces between the 1980s and 2010s. In the 1980s, they discussed the usefulness of the different school subjects. For example, there were many writings defending the benefits of studying languages. In the 2010s, the subject-oriented perspective had disappeared. In the 2010s, concern about young people and their mental well-being emerged in the public image of the school. The writings discussed, among other things, bullying, lynching and lack of school discipline. In terms of the development of the school's public image, one challenge is "the school" is not a single, clearly-defined agent. The media may ask why the school is not doing anything. However, there is no single "the school" to answer this call. The public image of the school is a composite of the actions and public images of several individual schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
