Researchers from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have discovered three new strains of bacteria, including one strain of Streptococcus and two strains of Staphylococcus, isolated from the feces of a wild eastern grey squirrel. These strains were found to be non-spore-forming, non-motile Gram-positive cocci, facultative anaerobes. Genomic analysis revealed that these strains represent novel species within the Streptococcus and Staphylococcus genera. The researchers propose the names Streptococcus sciuri sp. nov., Staphylococcus marylandisciuri sp. nov., and Staphylococcus americanisciuri sp. nov. for these newly discovered species. The complete draft genome sizes and G+C contents of these strains were also determined. This research has been peer-reviewed and published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. [Extracted from the article]
