A study conducted at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University in Luzhou, China, examined a case of a 17-year-old student who experienced a sprained ankle followed by worsening pain and swelling. The patient had a history of uncontrolled diabetes and developed a necrotic lesion on her ankle, indicating an invasive fungal infection. Diagnostic procedures identified Rhizopus oryzae as the causative organism, and treatment with amphotericin B led to improvement. However, the infection progressed, ultimately resulting in a mid-thigh amputation. The study highlights the increased incidence of mucormycosis during the COVID-19 pandemic and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. [Extracted from the article]
