A recent study conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center examined the effects of estrogen on skeletal muscle in young females during different phases of the menstrual cycle. The researchers used 31P MR Spectroscopic Imaging to measure phosphoryl metabolites in the soleus muscle. The study found that ATP-referenced phosphocreatine levels were lower during the early follicular phase compared to the peri-ovulation phase, and there was a positive correlation between muscle phosphocreatine levels and blood 17b-estradiol concentrations. The researchers concluded that 17b-estradiol may play a role in modulating the energy metabolism of skeletal muscle. [Extracted from the article]
