A study conducted by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) found that depression is a common symptom in patients with gynecological cancer undergoing chemotherapy. The study aimed to identify subgroups of patients with distinct depression profiles and evaluate the differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, severity of symptoms, and quality of life outcomes among these subgroups. Three distinct profiles were identified: low, high, and very high depression. Patients in the high and very high depression profiles reported higher comorbidity burden, anxiety levels, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and lower cognitive function and quality of life. The study suggests that clinicians can use the identified risk factors to identify high-risk patients and provide tailored psychological interventions to decrease symptom burden and improve quality of life.
