A recent study from the University of Texas Austin explores the epidemiology, microbiology, and pathology of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB) and its impact on the ophthalmic system. TB is a global health concern, with the highest number of infectious-related deaths and is the leading cause of death for individuals with HIV. While pulmonary manifestations are most common, TB can affect various organ systems, including the eyes. Diagnosing ocular TB is challenging due to its diverse presentations, but recent advancements in diagnostic tests and expert panel consensus are improving diagnostic abilities. Clinicians are becoming more confident in prescribing anti-TB treatments, but questions remain regarding the use of oral steroids and the risk of medication-induced ocular toxicity.
