A study conducted by investigators at Boston University examined the incidence of audiologic or otolaryngologic evaluation in patients with external ear anomalies (EEA). The study found that a majority of patients with EEA do not receive these evaluations. The researchers reviewed the charts of 723 patients diagnosed with EEA between January 2012 and January 2019 and found that only 45.2% of patients were evaluated by audiology or otolaryngology. Additionally, 17.3% of patients who obtained audiograms demonstrated hearing loss. The study suggests that there is a need for increased evaluation and intervention for patients with EEA.
