A study conducted at Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital in Rome, Italy, analyzed 17 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children. The study found that all patients tested negative for common hepatotropic viruses, but human-herpes-virus-7 and adenovirus were detected in blood and stool samples, respectively. Additionally, one child tested positive for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The researchers concluded that the etiology of this acute hepatitis is likely multifactorial, with adenovirus being mainly detected in stool samples. Most children recovered without complications, but one patient required a liver transplant. [Extracted from the article]
