A recent study conducted at the University of Kansas has found that female sex hormones, specifically estrogen, play a protective role in alcohol-associated liver fibrosis. The research showed that estrogen signaling can prevent weight gain, liver steatosis, injury, and fibrosis induced by a combination of high-fat diet and alcohol. This protection is achieved through the upregulation of a protein called PRMT6 and the suppression of integrin signaling.
