A new analysis from the University of Chicago's Crime Lab reveals that shootings in Chicago are concentrated in the summer months, with July alone accounting for 12% of the year's incidents. The study also found that these shootings primarily impact a small geographic region of the city, particularly neighborhoods in the South and West sides. The Crime Lab hopes that this data will inform decision-making and resource allocation for violence interrupters, law enforcement, and the business community. Additionally, the analysis shows that most summer shootings occur between 8 p.m. and 3 a.m. The study also examined robbery data, which revealed that downtown and the West Side experienced the majority of robberies during the summer months. The Crime Lab's interactive map, which includes the locations of Chicago Public Schools and libraries, aims to spur solutions to violence and help violence prevention groups identify suitable locations for youth employment and other activities.
