A recent report from researchers at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University in Madhya Pradesh, India discusses the challenges of delivering 17 beta-estradiol (EST), a potential therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's disease, due to its low water solubility and bioavailability. The researchers aimed to develop and optimize nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) coated with chitosan (CS) for intranasal administration to enhance EST delivery to the brain. The optimized CS-EST-NLCs showed favorable properties, including a nanoscale size, amorphous dispersion of EST, and sustained release of the drug. The study suggests that CS-EST-NLCs hold promise as a viable drug carrier for intranasal delivery to the brain, demonstrating good safety and high tolerability. [Extracted from the article]
