This article reports that a thriving fruit and vegetable market next to Yankee Stadium in New York City will soon be demolished to make way for a mall. But the 20-some merchants who sell the produce are seeking a new location together, believing that their businesses could founder if they break up. In March 2005, the merchants hired a lawyer and took the city to court to stall their eviction. A lobbyist for the merchants, Richard Lipsky, said that the merchants would be willing to drop the charge about the lease if they could find a common location for a new market, where they cater to immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean and Central America. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Herman Cahn asked a Columbia University professor of urban affairs, Susan Fainstein, to come up with a list of possible sites. She did, but the city's Economic Development Corp. rejected them all.
