This article reports that in November 2002, Oak Brook Bank took over construction of a River North condo project after the original developers were charged with bank fraud earlier that year. The building, only 20 percent complete, looked like a skeleton standing in the middle of downtown Chicago. After receiving disappointing bids from other developers, Oak Brook Bank decided to keep the building and supervise final construction and condo sales. For the first time in its 22-year history, the bank had essentially become a developer.
