The article focuses on the link between individuality and inwardness and the 17th-century literary character sketches. Character is referred to the qualities that distinguish a particular person from other human beings. Also, character refers to the moral essence of human individuality and autonomy. During such period, a character represents a certain category of human beings, which focuses on the type instead on the individual. A problem about the conflict between a growing awareness of human individuality and a rising sense of inwardness has been analyzed to answer how certain category of people has been represented by a character sketch.
