This article discusses the view of the U.S. Supreme Court on the fundamental purpose of American public education and the role of teachers in achieving its fundamental purpose. Long before the adoption of the Constitution in 1791, the political importance of public education was recognized by its Founders, including former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. The U.S. Supreme has not changed its view that the primary purpose of the public school is to further democratic ideals and has narrowed the role of teachers in determining what aspect of knowledge necessary for good citizenship.
