The article presents an overview of growth of ballooning since its early days as well as the role of graphic arts in it. Ballooning was first started by paper manufacturer Joseph Montegolfier, and his brother Etienne, who conducted initial experiments with paper. They built two large experimental balloons, which successfully sailed for about 6,000 feet on June 6, 1783. The first manned balloon flight was conducted on November 21, 1783. Artists and cartoonists started decorating the baloons. Soon with the use of pastel colors, it became a rich potential field for graphic designers. Nowadays different types of balloons including captive balloons and flying balloons are being used for ballooning. The author also shares his ballooning experience at Rio Grande Valley, New Mexico.
