The article examines the engravings, both attributed to Pedro de Villafranca of Madrid, Spain, of the title pages of two separate Spanish political tracts. The works are "Respuesta de España al Tratado de Francia sobre las pretensiones de la reina cristianisima," by Francisco Ramos del Manzano, published in 1667, and "Examen de la verdad en respuesta a los tratados de los derechas de la reina cristianisima," by González de Salcedo, published in 1668. Both pamphlets were written in response to French sovereignty claims for Spanish holdings in the Netherlands and the resulting War of Devolution. The author explores the meanings of the symbols and historical references which appear on the title pages.
