This article presents a review of "The Chronological Biography of Weng Fanggang," written by Shen Jin (sometimes pronounced Shum Chun in a non-Mandarin dialect). Weng (1733-1818) was an eminent scholar of the Qing dynasty, known for his knowledge of calligraphy, painting, and epigraphy. Shen’s biography of Weng, based mainly on two books written by the Weng himself -- a prose collection published in the 1830s and a chronological account of his life up to the year of his death -- is a "comprehensive" and definitive work on the Qing scholar’s life. Some mistakes were made, but these are a minor obstacle in light of the overall work.
