Uses Dutch East India Company (VOC) archives to explore resources on Japanese trade to Southeast Asia in the first century of Tokugawa rule. The Tokugawa shogunate restricted most foreign trade, except with the Dutch, who were allowed to enter only the port at Nagasaki. The VOC records show that Hizen porcelain products, made in Arita, were one of Japan's biggest exports, via two channels: the VOC and Chinese junk trade, also through Nagasaki, to many regions, including Southeast Asia. The article describes the archival resources housed in VOC collections (in the National Archives of the Netherlands and other repositories) and quantitatively analyzes Japanese porcelain trade with Vietnam during the 17th century.
