Domea was a site which was indicated in some map collections, documents concerning trading activities of the Westerners in the Tonquin (Tonkinese) estuary area in 17th-18th centuries, but it was not noted in Vietnamese annals. Since the year of 2000 many scholars of different field, like history, archeology, and geography have been interested in studying on Domea. However, their opinion concerning the role and position of Domea are very different and diversified. Based on our results of collecting, analyzing various sources of the Wwestern old maps and bibliographies, camparing with data collected in fieldworks, archeological excavatations, we do think that it is reliable to identify the river named as Domea named by Weaterners as the Thai Binh lower river today; Domea ports and villages (streets) be situated 20 degrees 45', below the Thai Binh estuary, which is now the residential area and rice field of the An Du hamlet, Khoi Nghia commune, Tien Lang district, Hai Phong city. Trading activities and commodity exchanges and relating services, especially towards trade junks and Western merchants turned Domea to a dynamic, lively and thriving center. Perhaps Domea was not a true city, port-city or urban area (as described by Western Traders at that time), but it was an international port and sea border-gate which was functioning uninterruptedly in centuries and in the given periods there was a place with crowded trades, and played a role as a biggest and most important port border-gate, ranking just after Thang Long and Pho Hien in the trading system in Tonkin in 17th-18th centuries. In the development history of the Thai Binh estuary areas, Domea can be considered the fore-runner of the Hai Phong port-city [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
