The article discusses the source of metal nails in New Zealand from the late 18th to the early 20th century, concluding based on historical records that almost all nails were imported from Great Britain and elsewhere until the establishment of a domestic wire nail manufacturing industry in the late 19th century. The European colonization of New Zealand is discussed, as is the importation over time of nails, their cost, and how they were used. The appearance of New Zealand nail manufacturers and the types of nails they made, such as iron and lead-head nails, are then discussed.
