This article discusses the presence of foreigners living in Puerto Rico, with a particular focus on its Spanish colonial period of 1776-1806. The author comments on the development of commercial agricultural industries in the country by a group of immigrants and examines the xenophobic social conditions they faced at the time. He analyzes the experience of Irish-born Jaime O'Daly y Blake, who was involved in the tobacco and sugar industries in colonial Puerto Rico. An exploration of the influence of the Spanish Bourbon reforms on Puerto Rico is also provided.
