The Italian governments support the French claim about the “internal” character of the Algerian War, even though they don’t actually share it, because they fear that a different attitude would involve serious risks. These risks change in the course of the war. Until March 1957, Italy fears that a different attitude could push France to abandon the European integration process. In the following months until May 1958, Italy is afraid that France, if abandoned by its allies, would evolve towards a leftist government or an authoritarian regime, which could reconsider French alliances. After the return of de Gaulle, Italy is convinced that France will opt for a liberal solution for Algeria only if it obtains satisfactions and solidarity in the European and Atlantic networks.
